SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Women’s Commission (MSWC) on Sunday expressed concern over recent reports of women joining the militant outfits in the State. Terming it as a dangerous trend, the MSWC urged the women to return to the mainstream.
Reacting to the reports of ANVC (B) training women cadres, the chairperson of the commission, Theilin Phanbuh said, “It is a dangerous trend for the young women, mostly teenagers to join the militant groups to fight crimes against women.”
Maintaining that the validity of the reports has to be verified, Phanbuh said the commission is yet to receive a report on it. “We are not sure whether the letters sent by them ANVC(B) is valid or not. This needs to be investigated and taken up seriously by police and the same could be looked into by the commission,” she said.
As far as vows made by these women cadres to punish the rapists is concerned, Phanbuh said that as responsible citizens of the State, the former should not take the law into their own hands.
Stating that the trend will put the lives of the many teenagers at stake, the commission’s chairperson said, “Efforts have to be made to pull them back to the mainstream.”
In a statement issued by the leader of the ANVC (B) women cadres Silan Ginchi Marak on Saturday many women have joined ANVC (B) to shield themselves from atrocities and vowed to punish rapists.
