SHILLONG, Sep 5: The Meghalaya government is all set to implement Automative Indian Standard (AIS)-140 standard GPS-based vehicle tracking system in Meghalaya.
The Transport department has envisaged the project to keep track of public transport vehicles in the state as mandated under Rule 125H of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), 1989, which mandates the installation of vehicle location tracking (VLT) device and emergency button for all public service vehicle registered after January 1, 2019.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) had earlier issued the guidelines for Deployment and Management of State wise Vehicle Tracking Platform for Safety & Enforcement in all states & Union Territories under the Nirbhaya Framework.
The objective of the project is to introduce a tracking system for continuous monitoring of public transport vehicles for better road safety and better support for enforcement services.
The state government has already floated the expression of interest and the last date for submission of the bids is September 20.
Considering the sensitivity and criticality of the application and data handled in this project, the department is likely to consider only PSUs or government organisations for the project.
The major works involved in the project includes deployment of AIS-140 compliant software for tracking integrating with the emergency response support system of Meghalaya Police and VAHAN, integration with the command & control centre, training to all stakeholders and SMS packages for one lakh vehicles, among others.
