SHILLONG, Sep 13: The Ka Sur Ki Nong Mawlai, an umbrella body consisting of the Khasi Students’ Union, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People and the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front, on Tuesday asked the state government to take action against the police officials responsible for killing former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew on August 13 last year.
KSU Mawlai general secretary Rapbor Nongrum, FKJGP Mawlai president Khrawkupar Nongsiej and HNYF Mawlai president Sanbor Rapsang on Tuesday told reporters that the report of the one-man inquiry commission headed by retired Justice T Vaiphei revealed that the forced entry into the house of the deceased in darkness and the subsequent killing of the deceased was a “reckless exercise and tantamount to disproportionate use of force”, which resulted in the death of the deceased.
The three leaders pointed out that the report also mentioned about the failure of the police intelligence.
They also said they do not agree with the statement of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma seeking clarification from the Tactical Team-I which had carried out the operation.
“We demand action against the erring police officials as per the relevant provisions of the law. The government should also terminate them,” they said.
They stated that they will meet again to discuss their future course of action if the government failed to take action against the tainted cops.
