TURA, Sep 18: The statement by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma that CrPC and CPC would be made applicable in tribal areas was on Sunday strongly opposed by the Council Nokmas from East Garo Hills, who termed the statement as confusing.
“The CM said that the District Council Courts, Lasker court and Nokma court would not be affected. However, he has also said that powers of the courts under Sixth schedule areas like District Council Courts and Village courts must be given to the Magistrates. This is confusing and also unacceptable,” the Nokmas said.
The Council said it would have no objection if the government modifies any procedure to be followed by District Council Courts or Village Courts, but that a law enacted by Parliament should not be made applicable in the Sixth Schedule areas.
