SHILLONG, Sep 19: The All India Malayali Association (AIMA) Meghalaya Unit along with Kalakairali Shillong celebrated Onam with cultural pomp and gaiety as the traditional Kerala dance ‘Thiruvathira’, besides other cultural performances became the highlight of the programme held at David Hall, 101 Area, on Sunday.
The day ended with the feast — Onam Sadya.
Transport Minister Dasakhiatbha Lamare was the chief guest of the occasion while Dr Shakeel Ahmed IAS was the guest of honour.
In his address, Lamare heaped praise on the community for their talents, while exhorting them to continue helping the state in matters pertaining to development.
Guest of honour Dr Shakil Ahmed spoke about the inclusive culture of Malayalees and its relevance in today’s world where Kerala stands out as a beacon of humanness.
According to him, Kerala can be a model for the whole world for inclusiveness.
President of AIMA Meghalaya Unit Pradeep Pillai welcomed Malayalees of all sectors in Meghalaya cutting across class and creed gathered to celebrate Onam in Shillong.
Given for service to the community, the annual Kalakairaly Kesari Award was conferred upon Jose Lukose.
As per tradition, a tug of war competition was also held with the team from Assam Rifles emerging victorious. Shefali Andaleeb, Accountant General (Audit) handed over the prizes to the teams.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Aquarius Mathew, Secretary of AIMA Meghalaya Unit.
