NONGSTOIN: Together with the rest of the State, the World Environment Day was celebrated on June 5 at Banglapluh, Mawshynrut by the KSU Mawshynrut Circle.
The Union held the function at Christ King Hall, Banglapluh as it was one of the worst hit areas in the recent cyclonic storm that took the lives of three persons.
Attending the function as the Chief Guest was A Lyngkhoi Executive Engineer PHED West Khasi Hills. During the function, Lyngkhoi administered an oath taking ceremony where more than 200 students pledged to plant trees in the area. It may be mentioned that the cyclonic storm had ravaged more than 60,000 trees in the area.
The World Environment Day was observed at Banglapluh with the theme “Think, Eat and Save”.
Other activities that marked the celebration were songs and dances by the school children of the area.
After the function, the Chief Guest along with the students planted saplings at the Don Bosco Hall compound and also at various other places at Mawshynrut.
In Mawkyrwat the World Environment Day was observed with various programmes which included Rally, Cleaning of Mawkyrwat Market, cleaning of Wah Sala stream and planting of saplings in DC Office premises.
The World Environment Day celebration was jointly organised by the District Administration Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills Officers Welfare Association, Seng Samla Mawkyrwat and Jingiaseng Samla District Church of God Mawten with the aim to spread awareness among the people about green and clean environment.
In line with the District Administration, activities such as cleaning of Nongjri market, Nongnah village etc and planting of saplings in different parts of the District were also organised by the Officers during the day long celebration of World Environment Day.
