Electric pole installation issue referred to MeECL

SHILLONG: The West Garo Hills District administration has referred the matter of the alleged erection of electric polls by Assam in Meghalaya territory to the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).

West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Pravin Bakshi on Friday, informed that the MeECL will submit its report to the District administration after conducting its survey.

The Garo Students Union had alleged that the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) has allegedly erected 18 electric poles in Pipulbari area.

According to Bakshi, the area is quite close to Assam-Meghalaya border and the MeECL has been asked to conduct the survey as they are aware about the definite boundaries till where electric polls should be erected The GSU had alleged that many people in the area have registered with the ASEB for supply of electricity and several shops in the area displayed signboards which read ‘Pipulbari, Dhubri District, Assam’.

According to Bakshi, police would also verify the reports of erection of electric polls by Assam Government.

Earlier, there were reports of alleged erection of electric polls and encroachment by Assam even in Ri- Bhoi and Jaintia Hills district.
