SHILLONG, Oct 8: Around 1,400 kilograms of marijuana seized by authorities in the state were destroyed in East Jaintia Hills on Saturday, which was virtually witnessed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah from Guwahati, Assam.
Altogether 1477.76 kg of ganja (marijuana) was destroyed at Star Cement Limited in East Jaintia Hills by way of incineration, a statement from the office of the East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police said.
The incineration of the marijuana was live-streamed for the regional meeting on Drug Trafficking and National Security at Guwahati, which was chaired by Union Home Minister Shah, in the presence of Chief Ministers, Chief Secretaries, Secretaries and DGs of the Northeastern states.
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Independence, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had decided that during this special campaign of 75 days, 75,000 kg of drugs will be destroyed by all regional units of the bureau.
The NCB achieved the target in just 60 days, well before the deadline, and reiterated its commitment to the nation regarding the fight against the drug abuse.
Around 82,000 kg of seized drugs were destroyed by July 30, officials said.
