RS MP moots U Tirot Sing museum at Hima Nongkhlaw

 Shillong: Rajya Sabha member of Meghalaya, Thomas A Sangma has urged the State Government to set up a museum in memory of U Tirot Sing Syiem

“It will be befitting to set up a museum at Hima Nongkhlaw depicting his contributions and achievements by way of films, paintings and sculptures,” said Sangma, while addressing a function organized to mark the 176th death anniversary of the freedom fighter at Mairang on Monday.

Sangma said as a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Tourism and Culture, he would try to push through some of the projects put forward by Hima Nongkhlaw.

The MP announced that Rs 7 lakh has been allotted for the construction of Durbar Hall and office of Hima Nongkhlaw and another Rs 3 lakh was allotted for improvement of infrastructure of U Tirot Sing College at Mairang.

Speaking on the occasion, W Kharlukhi, a lecturer of Synod College, termed U Tirot Sing as a true freedom fighter and a brave son of the soil.

The chairman of Dorbar Ki Khlieh Nongsynshar, John F. Kharshiing suggested that Hima Nongkhlaw should under take a census within the Hima, which should include its boundaries, various clans, sacred forests, water sources, the exact number of the ministers of Hima Nongkhlaw and total area of the land for the benefit of the society.

Meanwhile, commemorating the 176th death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem, the Western Youth Welfare Organiasation (WYWO) paid floral tributes to the freedom fighter by placing wreathes at the monument of U Tirot Sing erected at Hima Nongkhlaw on Saturday.

The WYWO together with the Sordar of Nongrmai, West Khasi Hills, SL Nongrang also put into writing on the life of a courageous fighter, Phan Nonglait and a waterfall at that village has been named after her–‘Phan Nonglait Water Falls’.

Phan Nonglait fought side by side with the men of the Hynniewtrep Community to drive away the British from this land.
