State team attends global conference in Malaysia

SHILLONG: Vice Chairman of Rajya Sabha, PJ Kurien, who is embroiled in a controversy for his alleged involvement in the infamous Suryanelli rape case in Kerala, led a delegation of Meghalaya legislators and others to Malaysia, ironically for a conference on women empowerment.

The Indian delegation led by Kurien to attend the 3rd ‘Women Deliver Global Conference’ from May 28 to 30 also included Deputy Speaker Sanbor Shullai, NPP legislator Nihim D Shira, Independent legislator Saleng Sangma and Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons.

The Conference held at Kuala Lumpur was attended by public representatives and academics from different parts of the world and it deliberated on issues relating to heath care, economical and political empowerment of women worldwide.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued here on Sunday, Commissioner and Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Andrew Simons said that the State Deputy Speaker and delegation also met the Malaysian Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Rohani Abdual Karim and discussed with her issues relating to women empowerment in India and Meghalaya in particular.

They also met Malaysia Finance Minister, Dato Seri Ahmad Husni bin Mohamad Hanadzlah at a dinner hosted by him and exchanged views of mutual interest, the statement added.
