TURA, Oct 14: NEHU Tura Pro-Vice Chancellor Sujata Gurudev has assured university’s support towards making Chigitchakgre village in West Garo Hills a ‘Bee Village’ and tourist destination.
Gurudev was addressing a gathering as the chief guest during a five-day training programme on beekeeping, which concluded on Friday at Chigitchakgre village under Gambegre C&RD block in West Garo Hills.
The programme was organised by the District Commerce and Industries Centre (DCIC), Tura, in collaboration with the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura, funded by NIBSM, Raipur Chattisgarh.
The project is supported by Scheme for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI) under MSME for five years.
Gurudev, in her address, appreciated the initiative of the Nokma and the residents of Chigitchakgre village for their decision to rear bees in every household.
Stating that honey found in Garo Hills is of fine quality, the Pro-Vice Chancellor said that this would provide ample opportunity for generating income and increasing the economic status of the locals.
She further informed that NEHU will adopt the village and ensured university’s support and financial assistance to make it a ‘Bee Village’ and a tourist destination in future.
Nokma of Chigitchakgre village Lithin Ch Marak, on the other hand, urged everyone to toil towards increasing the production of honey.
Stating that bees are beneficial for the agricultural and horticultural crops in the area, Marak said that they should also keep in mind to preserve the ecosystem and environment also for the next generation.
During the programme, the chief guest and other dignitaries also distributed bee boxes to the beneficiaries.
