Deborah seeks status report from Social Welfare dept

SHILLONG: Social Welfare Minister Deborah Marak on Monday said she has sought a status report from her department on the order of the High Court of Meghalaya quashing the appointment of Loma Jyrwa as Mission Director of the State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW).

The court had also questioned the role of Social Welfare Director H Shangpliang in the appointment of Jyrwa.

Jyrwa had already retired from service as the Deputy Director of Social Welfare department when she was appointed as Mission Director.

The court order was based on a petition filed by Angela Rangad and others.

After the verdict, Rangad had sought action from Chief Secretary WMS Pariat against both the officials The Government is, however, contemplating to appeal against the order of the court.

Asked about the stand of the department on the issue, the Minister said that she will examine the report of the department first before taking any action.

“I will get the report regarding the matter from the department on Tuesday and subsequently we will examine the steps to be taken,” she added.

There is already criticism from NGOs on the Government’s move to appeal against the order of the High Court.
