SHILLONG, Oct 20: The controversies surrounding the election of the new AICC president indicate Congress is crashing down further, suspended Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh said on Thursday.
“We were trying to understand the modalities of the presidential election and the way it was conducted. If a senior Congressman like Shashi Tharoor questions the manner in which the election was conducted, there must have been some deviation from the prescribed law,” she said while reacting to the election of Mallikarjun Kharge as the new AICC chief.
Stating that she knows Tharoor personally, Lyngdoh said Congress could have handled the election a little more elegantly.
“The election-related controversies are making headlines. This is not going to go in favour of Congress. I would have associated immediately with a person like Tharoor. I would have been a delegate in this election had I not been suspended,” she said.
She said many expected Congress to revamp itself from the top down.
“I don’t know if the reported controversies are true or false, but it points to the Congress party going down further. It is difficult to say at this point in time if this is good for the image of Congress,” Lyngdoh said.
The outcome of the Congress presidential poll, she said, could be a signal for her to move on. “Maybe, we have no other option,” she added.
Stating that she does not know Kharge, Lyngdoh said Congress needs to worry about where it is heading.
“I don’t foresee the party revamping in the immediate future,” she said.
