Women empowerment workshop begins at NEHU

SHILLONG: A five-day UGC-SAM workshop organised by the Department of Anthropology, NEHU commenced at the NEHU New Guest House Seminar hall on Tuesday.

Addressing the gathering, Regional Coordinator Prof. Streamlet Dkhar highlighted the importance of the UGC- sponsored sensitisation/awareness/motivation training workshop for women, its evolution in the country and implementation in the North-East. She also gave a brief account of the training workshop pertaining to the state of Meghalaya.

“The foundation workshop of this kind is mainly focused on creating sensitivity, awareness and motivation in women in the academic institutions to help them move into decision making positions in the university system. It also discusses the factors that have limited their (women’s) presence in leadership roles,” she said.

Archana Sharma, the Core Group Resource Person of NE Region, spoke about the history of the different phases of empowering women to take a leading role in higher education and presented her experience and views from the Northeast perspective highlighting the various problems faced.

She also urged the NEHU authorities to set up a women’s studies centre so that more schemes on women can be availed from the UGC.

Earlier, delivering the inaugural speech, Prof. B.Myrboh, Pro- Vice Chancellor, NEHU highlighted the importance of educating women.
