SHILLONG: Taking a serious note on the growing cases of crime against women in West Garo Hills, the District Level Coordination Committee on Crimes (DLCC) against women held an emergent meeting to review the status and the action taken on the alarming cases of crime against women specially minors.

DLCC on Crimes against women, chairman and Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Pravin Bakshi expressed grave concern over the rising cases of rape in Garo Hills and felt an urgent need to devise a strategy for an awareness programme.

He informed that it is the proactive role of everyone to deal with such crimes and the answer is not only in jurisprudence but the involvement of the society.

According to Bakshi, an awareness programme was necessary for all stakeholders dealing with such crimes as many were not yet aware of landmark orders of the Supreme Court and acts protecting the rights of children against sexual abuse.

He also felt the need to curtail the involvement of the Nokmas and the Mahari system of the Garos in such grievous crimes.

A number of cases were reviewed and followed up and it was hoped that with all rape cases being transferred to Fast Track Courts justice would be meted out to the victims.

The meeting was attended by members of DLCC on crime against women, NGOs, eminent lawyers and officials from the district administration.
