SHILLONG: The HSPDP has initiated a move to join the Congress-led MUA II Coalition Government, but the hurdle seems to be the objection to the idea by its legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit.

The Executive Committee of the HSPDP will meet on Monday morning to finally decide on the matter following which the party chief HS Lyngdoh will meet Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma in the afternoon to hand over a resolution of the party.

The party sources said that the hurdle seems to be that Basaiawmoit is not in favour of joining the Government.

However, majority of HSPDP functionaries are inclined to support the Government.

Sources said that a split in the HSPDP is imminent if the party joins the Government sans Basaiawmoit.

Besides Lyngdoh and Basaiawmoit, other two legislators of the party include Witting Mawsor and KP Pangniang.

Though UDP, NPP, GNC and two Independents had formed the Opposition-led Meghalaya People’s Forum, HSPDP had refused to join the alliance.

However, during the recent Budget session of the Assembly, the HSPDP legislators sat with the Opposition members.

The party president was not available for comments, but when contacted party functionary Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait said that the party president had not communicated anything in this regard.

“If there is such a move, the party president will definitely call us for a meeting,” she said, adding that the meeting scheduled for Monday was only to discuss the matters related to the upcoming district council elections.”
