SHILLONG, Nov 2: The police on Wednesday questioned Federation of Khasi Jaintia Garo People (FKJGP) senior vice president Elton Cliff Warjri for two hours in connection with last week’s violence during a public rally against unemployment in Shillong.
He was asked to appear before the Sadar police station at 11 am but the questioning started at around 12.30 after the arrival of the Investigating Officer. It continued till 2.30 pm.
Earlier, two FIRs were lodged – one with the Sadar police station and the other with the Laitumkhrah police station – under various Sections of the IPC in connection with the violence.
The questioning on Wednesday was in connection with the FIR lodged with the Sadar police station. Warjri was asked to appear again at the Sadar police station on Thursday for questioning in connection with the other FIR. During his questioning, he told the police the federation was not responsible for the violence.
According to him, the federation’s chief organising secretary had urged the members and the public, who participated in the rally, from the beginning to maintain peace as it was a peace rally.
“We tried our best to ensure that the rally passed off peacefully,” Warjri said.
FKJGP general secretary Eldie N Lyngdoh had also appeared before the Sadar police station on Tuesday. He will appear again before the same police station on November 4.
Himanta nudged to push for NIA probe
Meanwhile, a legislator in Assam, Krishnendu Paul, has written to the state’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma demanding an NIA probe into the FKJGP rally violence in Shillong.
Paul had written to Himanta on Monday.
In the letter, he said the attacks were but a continuation of a series of such untoward incidents.
The Meghalaya Linguistic Minority Development Forum also held a zoom meeting which was attended by nine linguistic minority communities.
In the meeting, the communities unanimously decided to stage a protest in Delhi on January 23 against the alleged atrocities meted out to the minorities for the last 45 years.
