SHILLONG: The State Police has made a breakthrough into the murder of a middle aged woman at Laban last month.

East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang informed that two accused were arrested by police on Saturday for the murder of Debjani Khan (42) whose body was recovered from her residence at Laban on May 27.

The arrested persons have been identified as Subash Biswas (19) and Pradip Jaswal (37), residents of Khyndailad and Lower Lumparing respectively. Both the accused have been remanded in five days police custody.

Khan who used to stay alone in her house was reported missing and later her body was recovered from her residence.

Reacting to a query on the rape angle, the senior police official said that police is still awaiting the postmortem report.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Vivek Syiem informed that altercation between the accused and the victim was the prime reason behind the murder.

The altercation had taken place on May 23, Syiem informed.

As per the confession of the accused Subash Biswas, he first hit the lady with a heater on her head and then suffocated her with a blanket and stabbed her but it did not pierce.

According to Syiem, police came to know about the accused few days after the crime but the investigation was kept under cover so that a trap could be laid.

Police is also investigating into the loot and robbery angle in the incident.

He also said that police is suspecting Subash Biswas as the prime accused in the case as he had visited the house on the day when she was murdered besides he had absconded soon after the crime.
