SHILLONG, Nov 10: Second in a series of on cyber laws, cyber security and cyber-crime, a webinar on ‘Right to Privacy vis-a-vis the Information Technology Act’ was jointly conducted by Rotary Club of Gauhati South, Rotary Club of Shillong Heritage and Rotaract Club of South Guwahati recently.
Right to Privacy is of immense significance for every single citizen of this nation and the webinar evoked tremendous interest and enthusiasm, especially among students of law, which was evident by the participation of 402 rotarians, rotaractors, and teachers and students of National Law University, Assam, NEF Law College, Royal School of Law, USTM School of Law and JB Law College.
Giving the introductory remarks, Sr. Advocate, Gauhati High Court, Rakhee Sirauthia Choudhury, said the invention of the internet has also brought the problems of data theft, identity theft, online fraud, hacking and the massive invasion of privacy, she added.
Justice Jasti Chelameswar, former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and former Judge of Supreme Court of India, spoke during the webinar. Some of Justice Chelameswar’s notable judgments include holding Section 66A of the Information Technology Act to be unconstitutional and the dissenting opinion in the National Judicial Appointments Commission verdict.
Justice Chelameswar, in his keynote address, spoke about the changes brought about by the progress in artificial intelligence and biotechnology. He said the full contours of the Right to Privacy are not known to anybody, even to the best legal minds.
