JOWAI: Though coal mining has taken place in the State for decades, none of the coal mine owners have come forward to get their coal mines registered, according to the Labour Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh, who visited East Jaintia Hills recently.
The Minister, who held a meeting with coal mine owners in Khliehriat, had requested all coal mine owners to get their mines registered with the concerned department.
The Minister also informed that there is a recommended level of compensation to be paid to a victim’s family in case of accidental death in coal mines.
“However, I am told that the procedure cannot be activated because a lot of coal mines in which such accidental deaths occur have never been registered and declared,” she said.
According to the ministry, only 21 coal mines have come forward to be registered.
