SHILLONG, Nov 13: The state Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday said the comments made by Akhil Giri, the party’s West Bengal minister about President Droupadi Murmu were insensitive and unacceptable.
“His comments are completely insensitive. We learned that the minister has apologised for the remark but the very fact that the statement was made is totally not acceptable at all,” TMC leader George B Lyngdoh said on Sunday.
In a video, Giri was heard saying, “They (BJP) said that I am not good-looking. We don’t judge anyone by their appearance. We respect the office of the President. But how does our President look?”
Giri tendered an apology after receiving a torrent of criticisms from across the country for his remark.
Meanwhile, the state BJP called for a complete boycott of the TMC by the tribal communities in Meghalaya. The call was in the context of Giri’s remark on Murmu, the first tribal person in India to be elected to the highest constitutional post in the country.
Reacting to this, Lyngdoh said, “I would be happy if the state BJP would be as sensitive and upright in responding to the ugly state of affairs in the state and the country.”
He said apart from railing against the corrupt practices of its own government, the state BJP has done nothing to show that they are responsible towards the people of the state.
