SHILLONG: Nongthy-mmai MDC (Ind) Latiplang Kharkongor has suggested that the KHADC should pass a resolution to prepare a map of the areas under its jurisdiction in order to build a strong case for claiming the land along the inter-State border with Assam.

“We can come up with the map which would also enable the Council to demarcate the areas under its jurisdiction. This initiative would be handy in helping the State Government to stake claim over the disputed areas while holding dialogue with Assam,” Kharkongor said while participating in a motion on the inter-State boundary dispute during the Summer Session of the KHADC here on Thursday.

He further suggested that the Council can get the assent of the Governor on the proposed resolution to prepare the map in order to make the whole process authentic. KHADC CEM Pynshngain N Syiem, however, did not react to the suggestion but stressed on the need to put strong claims over land belonging to Meghalaya.

“The district council would ask traditional chiefs to supply land maps to identify boundaries with Assam,” he added. He reiterated that the Executive Committee is serious about the inter-state boundary problem and recognizes the need to reach an early settlement on the issue.
