SHILLONG, Nov 27: Following frequent aberrations in maintaining the status quo along the disputed Meghalaya-Assam interstate border, the central government has decided to ask the two state governments to sign an agreement to allow free movement of people and goods on both sides of the border in the disputed areas till the time a permanent solution to the vexed problem is found.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed of the development and said that the agreement is necessary since no one respects the status quo decision.
He said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah would first call a meeting of the chief secretaries and DGPs of the two states to discuss the matter. “After this, there will be final meeting with the chief ministers before the agreement is signed to ensure that incidents like the one that occurred at Mukroh do not happen again,” Tynsong added.
He made it clear that the two police forces should work in close coordination with the traditional heads in order to prevent any untoward incident and not harass the villagers from time to time.
