SHILLONG, Nov 28: The Trinamool Congress on Monday said not only Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma but his entire Cabinet has lost moral responsibility to continue in power after the Mukroh firing incident which had left six persons, including five Meghalaya villagers, dead.
The party insisted that either a new government should be installed or the President’s Rule should be imposed in the state.
After an all-party meeting on Monday, senior TMC leader George B Lyngdoh told reporters the government has failed in its responsibility to act on time even after the border villagers had approached it with complaints about increasing highhandedness of the Assam government in the border areas.
“But the government shrugged off its responsibility. If this irresponsibility continues, then I think the Chief Minister and the entire Cabinet have lost the moral responsibility to rule the state. Either a new government should come or President’s Rule should be imposed,” Lyngdoh said.
The TMC leader raised doubt on whether the judicial commissions constituted by Assam and Meghalaya governments will be able to do their job. He wondered how the Assam judicial commission would exceed its jurisdiction since the incident happened within the jurisdiction of Meghalaya. Similarly, he asked how the Meghalaya judicial commission will work on the police and other people who are under the control of Assam. He also said that it is still not clear whether the Centre has agreed to a probe and if yes, what kind of probe.
“We said why we do not put our police into action. We demanded that the culprits should be arrested and arrest warrant should be issued by the state police as it is a murder committed on the soil of Meghalaya,” Lyngdoh said.
He also said the party suggested that this criminal act of the Assam police should be dealt with from the side of Meghalaya by ensuring that the government asserts its authority over the case but there was no assurance on the suggestion.
He said it is almost a week that the incident took place but the state government has not asserted its jurisdictional authority over the area. It sends a message that the government is soft in asserting its authority, he added.
Other party leaders and participants in the meeting suggested the government to strengthen security in border areas, provide care to the families which lost their loved ones and help those who sustained injuries in the incident.
