SHILLONG: The State Government on Monday expressed its determination to trace absconding Sub Inspector Narul Islam, the accused in the Ampati twin rape case.

“We are confident that the accused will be nabbed and punished as per law,” Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said here.

Dr Sangma also admitted that there were lapses on the part of the police with respect to their failure in arresting the rape accused and placing him behind bars instead of keeping him in a police quarter.

The Chief Minister also informed that actions have already been taken against the erring police officials who had failed to make the arrest.

Meanwhile, Dr Sangma also informed that the State Government is analyzing broad policy guidelines on mechanisms to strengthen the police and to upscale the capacity of police officers at different level starting from the police stations.

“We will ensure that all the police stations have enough manpower to ensure effectiveness,” the Chief Minister said, adding that efficiency will improve if trainings are imparted to the police personnel at different levels.

Dr Sangma also stressed on the need to ensure that the laws to protect the women and children are enforced in the right direction.
