SHILLONG, Dec 20: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) has lodged a complaint with the Registrar of the High Court of Meghalaya against 42 overloaded trucks, caught by members of the association on December 9 at Ryndangbriew (Mawiong) View Point. The trucks were carrying coal, limestone and boulder chips.
In a letter addressed to the Registrar, HNYM vice president Pyrkhatlang Nongphlang said they fear that the bridge might collapse anytime if such overloaded trucks are allowed to ply through the Umiam Bridge every night.
“We are concerned about the well being of our people and the life and death of the innocent people residing in the downstream of the Umiam Bridge if the government continues to turn a deaf ear towards our plea,” Nongphlang said.
According to him, the release of the trucks by the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police points to the fact that he does not care about the welfare of the people living in the downstream of the Umiam Bridge.
