SHILLONG: Almost twenty months after its initiation, the Khyndailad beautification project is yet to be completed.

It was on October 14, 2011 when Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma launched the Khyndailad beautification project with much fanfare, but the implementation of the project is progressing at a snail’s pace.

The project has already missed many deadlines and till date laying of tiles on the Khyndailad thoroughfare is yet to be completed.

PWD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Tuesday informed that the project would be completed in September this year.

“The project is ninety per cent finished and final touches are being given now,” Dhar said during an informal meet with news persons here on Tuesday.

The project which includes beautification of Khyndailad and its adjoining areas and widening of roads in certain stretches of the city is being taken up at an estimated budget of Rs 16.73 crore. Surprisingly, no move has yet been made for widening of roads in other parts of the city which was proposed under the beautification project.

What is also a cause of concern is that in several places in Khyndailad, the interlocking tiles have been dug out due to encroachment by the roadside vendors and hawkers.
