District admin to map child labourers in S West Khasi Hills

 MAWKYRWAT: Aiming to prohibit child labour in South West Khasi Hills District, Deputy Commissioner A Mawlong on Tuesday held a meeting with members of the District Task Force Committee on Child Labour to discuss on vulnerability mapping of child labour in the district.

Mawlong pointed out that Section 3 of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 states that no child below the age of 14 years shall be permitted to work in any occupation viz., automobiles workshop or garages, coal mines, saw mills, stone breaking and stone crushing units, tyre making, rag picking and scavenging, restaurants, hotels and dhaba.

He also underlined that Section 40 of the Mines Act, 1952 and Amendment Act, 1983 states that no person below 18 years shall be allowed to work in any mines.

A sub-committee on child labour was constituted comprising of the District Child Protection Officer, District Labour Commissioner, Child Development Project Officer, Ranikor Block Development Officer, Medical Officer from the Health Department, Police officials and NGOs from Nonghyllam and Nongjri, which will visit the mining areas of the district.
