SHILLONG, Dec 31: The year 2022 is gone and there are not many euphoric memories as Meghalaya was bedeviled by protests, controversies, besides law and order issues. However, with all that in the back seat, the citizens are looking forward to an optimistic and meaningful year in 2023.
In an attempt to learn what the citizens expect in the year 2023, The Shillong Times spoke to few personalities who, like everyone else, had something at stake when it came down to the events that made headlines in the state in the past one year.
Vivek Syiem, the Superintendent of Police (City), is expecting a progressive, positive and peaceful Meghalaya.
Whereas Ampareen Lyngdoh, a senior politician of Meghalaya, echoed similar views as she called for peace, which according to her would also usher in all-round development.
“I wish to be the catalyst for unity resulting in a government that will empower itself to deliver. It is an ambitious expectation but there’s no harm in piping a dream – it keeps us going,” she said.
George Lyngdoh, another seasoned politician, said he wants the new year to be filled with peace, joy, unity and hope. With 2023 to become a crucial year in view of the state Assembly polls, he prayed that people would elect leaders who take on the burden of leadership with utmost dedication and humility.
Environment Safeguard Specialist and Chairman of State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC), Meghalaya, Naba Bhattacharjee, said every day of any year, he expects a constructive and meaningful intervention on the part of both the government and the society in not only conserving but also reclaiming the depleting forest, natural resources and environment status.
“I sincerely pray and hope that people elect biodiversity-conscious individuals who will sincerely unite all in this important mission. Time is running out and our coming generations is poised to bear the brunt of present onslaught on nature,” Bhattacharjee said
Meanwhile, Shillong-based activist Agnes Kharshiing is expecting to exhibit dedication in the New Year, with there being transparency in the use of public funds.
“I also expect honest medical treatment, truthful results of appointments in various departments, stoppage of illegal appointments in various departments and safety of citizens,” she said.
