SHILLONG, Jan 3: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee slammed the regional parties in Meghalaya for blindly following the BJP and remaining oblivious to their wrongdoings without even raising their voice.
MPCC president Vincent H Pala was categorical in his assertion that the BJP was looking down upon smaller parties like the UDP and the PDF since the saffron party believes that these parties cannot secure absolute majority on their own.
“The BJP looks at them as incompetent as they know these parties do not have the capacity to win absolute majority. They do not even have the capacity to set up more than 15-20 candidates,” Pala said, adding that it was for this reason that the smaller parties have option other than following the BJP or the NPP, which is a staunch BJP ally.
Pala extended a friendly hand towards the regional parties and advising them to break the shackles. “There are good people in the UDP and the PDF but the BJP is bulldozing them as well as the people of the state,” he said.
Continuing his attack on the BJP, Pala said the saffron party is saying that they would pass the Uniform Civil Code but the biggest question here is whose code will be followed as Hindus, Muslims and Christians have their own unique code in terms of marriage.
“Such a move will affect the local customary practices. In Arunachal Pradesh, Kiren Rijiju says eat beef but in Assam they do not allow transportation of cattle. In Meghalaya, now they are imposing fines on the people for transporting cattle,” Pala added.
