TURA: The Mankachar portion of Assam bordering Garo Hills remains under tight vigil following Thursday’s incident in the area in which three local men were assaulted in two separate incidents by some goons.
Following the incident rumours have been flying thick and fast about people fleeing from the border belt. These were claimed to be untrue by the authorities of South West Garo Hills district.
“Reports about people fleeing are totally false. People are very much in their villages. These are just rumours,” said Deputy Commissioner of the district Ram Singh.
The district police chief, R Muthu had been camping in Takrambari-Monabari area of the border since Thursday to oversee the law and order supervision in the light of the Mankachar incident.
All three victims were taken to Ampati hospital for treatment. “They are in stable condition and under observation. They received a few stitches on the head,” said a doctor from Ampati hospital.
AAMSU threat: Meanwhile, the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) has threatened to call for an economic blockade of Garo Hills unless Meghalaya Government raises the ex-gratia amount for the victims of the mob violence to Rs 10 lakh.
The AAMSU held a public meeting at Hat Singimari town of Assam bordering Hallidayganj in West Garo Hills on Thursday and called upon the traders to stop the supply of food items to Garo Hills until Meghalaya government fulfills its demands.
