SHILLONG: Outgoing Governor RS Mooshahary on Saturday indicated his willingness to act as mediator between Meghalaya and Assam to resolve the decades old boundary dispute.
Addressing news persons at the Raj Bhavan before his departure for Guwahati along with his family members, Mooshahary hinted at his readiness to be a mediator between the two states, when asked to comment on the unresolved inter-state border dispute.
“Why not suggest to them that the outgoing Governor should mediate? This is the suggestion I can give you,” he told the press persons in a lighter vein.
He noted the cascading effects of the happenings in Assam in other North Eastern states and stated that Assam is the ‘mother state’ in the region and whatever happens in Assam has an impact elsewhere.
Citing a case, Mooshahary pointed out to the frequent bandh in his homeland, the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) area, which affects the entire Northeast region.
He said that on last count there were up to 90 bandhs in a year which had severe effect on the entire region.Asked by reporters whether he was seriously considering a stint in politics, Mooshahary stated that all he wants is to ‘remain active’ and politics gives him a ‘lot of interest’.
He, however, made it clear that no political party has approached him as yet.
Mooshahary, the first tribal IPS officer who headed the National Security Guard and the Border Security Force, assumed office as Governor of Meghalaya on July 1, 2008.
He was the first person from an indigenous community to become Governor of the predominantly tribal State and the only non-politician ever from the Northeast to hold the constitutional office.
