SHILLONG: The National People’s Party (NPP) has demanded resignation of PWD (Roads) Minister for Tuesday’s incident in which an engineer died on the spot following collapse of an under-construction bridge at Kolmesagre in East Garo Hills district.

Demanding an inquiry into the incident, NPP spokesperson James K Sangma in a statement on Wednesday said, “The incident has happened due to the gross negligence on the part of the PWD (Roads).”

Stating that the PWD (Roads) Minister should also take moral responsibility for this accident, the NPP leader urged the government to release an ex-gratia to the family of the deceased immediately. Questioning slow implementation of several projects namely the NH 40, construction of a bridge over Simsang river, widening of Rongram-Phulbari Hill road etc, he urged the Chief Minister to personally oversee the functioning of PWD (Roads) for proper implementation of all the pending projects.
