SHILLONG, Jan 30: The UDP State Election Committee (SEC) on Monday approved five more names of party candidates for the February 27 Assembly polls.
Talking to reporters, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh said the five candidates are from Garo Hills.
The fresh list includes the names of Bipul Ch Sangma from Rangsakona, Subhankar Koch from Selsella, Julius T Sangma from Tikrikilla, Sushil Goyeri from Raksamgre and Teseng A Sangma from Rongara-Siju.
With this, the UDP has announced a total number of 45 candidates including 15 from Garo Hills.
Lyngdoh said the party was satisfied with the candidates they have put up for the polls.
“As per our assessment, we have five candidates who are frontrunner to win the elections. I can say that majority of our candidates will put up a strong fight in their respective constituencies,” Lyngdoh said, without elaborating further.
Admitting that the party has received applications for all the constituencies in both Khasi-Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills, he said the party would not set up candidates just for the sake of it.
Lyngdoh also clarified that the allotment of the tickets was decided by members of the SEC comprising senior members of the party.
“It is totally misleading to say that the decision was taken only the president, secretary or a few leaders of the party,” he said.
