SHILLONG, Feb 4: TMC leader and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma attacked the NPP-led MDA Government for making hollow promises and failing to deliver on promises.
He underlined “unfulfilled” assurances on health and education sectors and the “unaddressed” issue of unemployment.
“The development measures started during my tenure remained unfinished in the last five years and job vacancies have not been filled up. This government has delayed the appointment of thousands of teachers, leaving them in utter disarray,” Sangma told a gathering at the South West Garo Hills district TMC office in Ampati on Saturday.
Taking a dig at the ruling dispensation for being mired in corruption, he said only Rs 62 crore was spent on a medical college for which the government received Rs 172 crore. “There is no word about the rest of the money,” he added.
“Isn’t it the duty of the government to be transparent? Am I going to study again as a doctor? No. These are for the people,” Sangma said.
Pointing out that medical colleges are established not only for education but also to treat the sick, he said, “There are specialists and super-specialist professors in medical colleges.”
“Despite facilities such as CT scans and MRI, we are forced to go to Goalpara, Guwahati and elsewhere. Do our Garo Hills elders have a lot of money?” he asked.
Sangma also faulted the NPP-led government for dragging Meghalaya down on all fronts. “Our youngsters stare at unemployment even after pursuing higher education,” he said.
The government also failed to arrest drug trafficking and resultant addiction in the state, he said, justifying the TMC’s call to stand united and save Meghalaya.
