New Delhi: Meghalaya Governor Dr KK Paul has said that the North Easten Council (NEC) should play more proactive role in development of the region.

Addressing the 62nd North East Council (NEC) Plenary meeting here on Tuesday, the Governor said the NEC could play a big role in solving inter-state border disputes prevalent among the various states of the region.

“This would also facilitate inter-state trade and commerce besides bringing in overall development,” he said.

Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma in his speech lamented that even allocated budget of the NEC has been truncated. “The proposed outlay Rs.1840.40 crore for 2012-13 has been reduced to only Rs 770 crore,” he said.

Dr Sangma batted for better connectivity to the Hill state.

He demanded modernization of Umroi airport and operationalization of Bajlek airport.
