TURA: The two day picketing of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council by the GSU demanding separate electoral roll for the upcoming MDC elections and the implementation of the Inner Line Permit concluded on Friday.

This is the first time a strike against the GHADC has been called by the Garo Students Union.

Reiterating their demand for a separate electoral roll for the upcoming MDC elections GSU CEC General Secretary John Miltu Sangma speaking to media persons said that the GHADC will have to finish creating a separate electoral roll well before the MDC elections failing which the Union will launch a massive agitational programme.

Maintaining that the GHADC had bungled by registering and allowing non indigenous people to participate in the MDC elections Sangma said that the onus of protecting the rights of the indigenous people of Garo Hills from outside interference fell on the GHADC and as such the Union demand the complete deletion of their names before the MDC elections.

He informed that a public meeting expected to be participated by people from all corners of Garo Hills will be held on July 23 at Tura to decide on future course of action regarding the matter.

The Union has also demanded the immediate implementation of the Inner Line Permit as recommended by the high level committee on influx.

The importance of the ILP is evident from the fact that the present trend of illegal migrants blending unchecked into the indigenous populace is posing a serious concern in terms of security and socio economic stability of the State Sangma stated.
