Newly elected MLAs take their oath

SHILLONG, March 6: The 58 newly elected legislators excluding pro-tem Speaker Timothy D Shira on Monday took oath as members of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly during a special session here.
Shira administered the oath of office to the MLAs — 45 of whom belong to the NPP-led coalition set to form the government under Conrad Sangma.
Out of the 60 seats where polls were conducted, Sohiong was left out because of the death of a candidate, HDR Lyngdoh.
The first one to take the oath on Monday was MLA from Nartiang, Sniawbhalang Dhar.
All of the MLAs greeted the pro-tem Speaker after taking oath and returned to their seats.
Former Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh, Mairang MLA was the last to take oath.
During the proceedings, the Commissioner and Secretary of the Legislative Assembly also placed the Election Commission’s notification constituting the 11th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on the table of the House.
The Assembly also observed a two-minute silence.
In addition, pro-tem Speaker Timothy D Shira also announced the names of the members nominated to the panel of chairmen of various assembly committees.
On Thursday, the House will sit again to elect the Speaker. The vote of confidence will also take place the same day.
