MAWKYRWAT, March 8: A day after a group of people from Mawthawpdah village in South West Khasi Hills closed down two schools, viz. Mawthawpdah Government Lower Primary School and the Mawthawpdah Presbyterian Upper Primary School, top officials from the Education department rushed to the village and held parleys with the people on Tuesday.
According to sources, following lengthy deliberations, the group of people, led by one Sparlindro Lyngdoh, agreed to reopen the lower primary school.
They, however, refused to reopen the upper primary school, claiming that the school belongs to the Shnong and not the Presbyterian Church.
It was also informed that on Wednesday, the Dorbar Shnong Mawthawpdah held a meeting to discuss the issue, and urged the group to reopen the upper primary school.
Albeit the Dorbar Shnong said that the ownership of the school can be challenged in a court of law, the group continued to remain adamant on keeping the school shut.
It may be mentioned that the forceful and sudden closure of the school, which was established in 1960, has affected the students and teachers alike and their fate continues to hang in balance.
