SHILLONG, March 8: MDA nominee and NPP MLA from North Tura, Thomas A Sangma, is very likely to be elected as the Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly unopposed on Thursday.
The opposition parties have reportedly not filed any nomination for the post, and it is most likely that Sangma will be announced as the Speaker of the House elected unanimously.
Sangma had filed his nomination for the election of the Speaker before the Commissioner and Secretary of Assembly, Andrew Simons, here on Tuesday.
In his last term as MLA, Thomas A Sangma held the position of the Adviser to the Chief Minister.
The vote of confidence will also take place on Thursday.
It may be mentioned that the Conrad Sangma-led MDA 2.0 at the moment enjoys the support of 45 members in the 59-member house
The alliance right now has the support of NPP (26), UDP (11), BJP (2), PDF (2), HSPDP (2) and Independents (2) — as per the numbers, there would be no problem for MDA 2.0 government to prove majority in the House.
