SHILLONG: Police have recovered a five-month-old female foetus from Wahumkhrah River near Jingkieng Mawlai, a delayed report said on Wednesday.

The female foetus is lying at the Shillong Civil Hospital morgue. The body remains unidentified and the police are trying to locate the mother, following the angle of illegal abortion that has come about.

“At the moment, we are trying to locate the mother. Once we get her, we will know whether it is case of legal or illegal abortion,” East Khasi Hills SP, M Kharkrang said.

Medical experts, however, feel that this is a confirmed case of illegal abortion. “If it was a legal abortion at a recognised institute, the foetus would not have been recovered from a nearby river,” a medical expert said. He said that in the case of a legal abortion, the foetus is normally disposed off immediately with the consent of the family members.
