Shillong, March 14: In a matter which was never discussed in Parliament, the government has said that the crimes related to cryptocurrencies amounted to Rs 953.70 crore so far.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told this in Parliament replying to a query by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Velusamy P.

The Finance Minister informed that the financial action force task (FATF) has made amendments in wake of growing use of virtual money as there have been incidents of laundering and terror funding.

Velusamy P had raised concerns on the growing use of criminal activities using virtual assets, asking how the government was detecting and monitoring such activities.

Sitharaman said that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) keeps on circulating public notices asking the people to remain cautious regarding the online frauds and cryptocurrencies.

“RBI has been cautioning users, holders and traders of Virtual Currencies (VCs) vide public notices from 2013, that dealing in VCs is associated with potential economic, financial, operational, legal, customer protection and security related risks,” she said.
