SHILLONG: Too many tasks at the hands of the Meghalaya Police have hampered anti-insurgency operations in Garo Hills, DGP PJP Hanaman told reporters here on Thursday.
The DGP admitted that police cannot put greater concentration on counter-insurgency operations in Garo Hills due to various tasks they have to perform including normal law and order duty, easing communal tension and investigation of cases, among others.
“Despite these constraints, we have made progress in tackling militancy in Garo Hills,” the DGP said.
According to Hanaman, police will continue to put pressure on the GNLA militants to check the ongoing extortion and smuggling of weapons.
A per police estimate, there are at least 200 armed cadres with sophisticated weapons determined to take on the security forces.
The GNLA recently ruled out talks with the State Government.
Meanwhile, reacting to the Supreme Court ruling directing the Meghalaya Police or any other authority to release CMJ University Chancellor, CM Jha, on bail immediately after his arrest, the DGP said police would interrogate the Chancellor once he surrenders.
“We will investigate into the matter till it reaches its logical end,” he said, while adding that the State Police was yet to receive the Supreme Court order.
