SHILLONG, March 15: Member of the Rajya Sabha WR Kharlukhi has called upon the Central Library of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) to digitally archive information pertaining to Meghalaya in particular and the North East in general.
Addressing the inaugural function of the 29th Seminar of the Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres (IASLIC) at NEHU on Thursday, Kharlukhi informed that the state government is also setting up a museum on similar lines in Garo Hills.
The MP also said that the government welcomes any assistance from the Central Library of NEHU for the initiative.
Informing that the initiative will not only benefit the PhD researchers but all those who are willing to learn about Meghalaya as well as the Northeast, Kharlukhi said, “It is also going to have an impact on tourism in Meghalaya and other Northeastern states because information will be instantly available on the internet. Tourism is one of the departments which will really help in the growth and development of the state.”
Observing that Libraries and Information Centres play a vital role in disseminating right information, the MP further said that the same is very critical, in an era of technology, so as to meet the needs of the community at large.
According to him, emphasis on digital India initiative is already being laid by the Libraries and Information Centers across the country.
“Special emphasis on skill development on modern, new-age librarians is the need of the hour. It is also equally important to renew focus on the issues and complexities involved in research and data management,” Kharlukhi added.
On the occasion, the MP also released a souvenir in the presence of NEHU Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla, IASLIC general secretary Abhijit Kumar, among others.
