SHILLONG: After the Supreme Court’s verdict against a single common entrance test -NEET — for admission to MBBS, BDS and post-graduate courses in all medical colleges, Meghalaya government is now contemplating to allot MBBS seats under the Central Pool on the basis of the percentage of marks obtained by students in Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination.
“Personally, I am in favour of allotting seats on the basis of percentage of marks in the 10+2. I will take a decision on the allotment of seats in a day or two after my return from Delhi”, Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek said over telephone from New Delhi on Sunday.
Meanwhile, official sources informed that at the directorate level two lists of candidates are being prepared — one on the basis of grading obtained by candidates in NEET and other one on the basis of percentage of marks in the HSSLC.
“We have submitted both the lists to the State Government. Now, it is for the Government to take the final call,” sources said.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had scrapped holding of a single common entrance test (NEET) for admission to MBBS, BDS and post-graduate courses in all medical colleges, paving the way for private colleges to conduct their own examination.
The apex court verdict holding that common entrance test for admission in medical colleges “violates the rights of state and private institutions” is likely to have fallout as such tests are conducted for other professional courses like engineering and management. The three judge bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir, who retired on July 19, in a majority 2-1 verdict quashed the notifications for the National Eligibility-cum- Entrance Test (NEET).
The apex court quashed the notifications issued by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Dental Council of India (DCI) by which admissions to MBBS, BDS and Post-graduate courses to medical colleges were to be made solely on the basis of NEET and States and privately-run institutions were prevented from conducting any separate examination.
