Apropos of the letter – Aversion to Hindi as a language – (ST March, 23, 2023), I fully resonate with the writer that the more languages you know, the more human you are. But I feel this should apply more to the public figures and Heads of States (here the Governor of a State) as they have to deal with and understand the population and their problems and the culture they bathe in. The majority of Meghalayans, not barring our legislators, do not understand Bazaar Hindi leave alone “Shudh Hindi.” So how can you just impose a language which is not a national language and expect everyone in the Assembly and the hoi polloi to grasp the meaning and vision of the Governor’s address? There is no denying that learning a language can indeed fill up the many deficiencies in our ideas, but what is important here is that a Head of State should at least be able to communicate to his people and, in this case, it could have been achieved if language was not a barrier and if official language of the State was used.
