SHILLONG: Police on Sunday arrested a prominent city-based NGO leader — June Warbah in connection with a cheating case.

The arrest was based on the complaint lodged at Lumdiengjri PS by one Jrat Sing Lyngdoh that Warbah cheated him of Rs. 31 lakh with a promise to secure an MBBS seat for his daughter at Bharati Vidyapath Deemed University, Pune.

Warbah, who is the project manager of FXB, an NGO dealing with issues on drug abuse was arrested from her residence at Lama Villa.

Police on Monday informed that the accused managed to return only Rs 4.5 lakh out of the total amount she had taken from the complainant.

Accordingly, a case has been registered against Warbah.  Meanwhile, police informed that Warbah was later admitted at Shillong Civil Hospital after being sent for medical examination.
However, Warbah was released on bail.
When contacted, she said that the whole act was an attempt to tarnish her image. She, however, admitted that she had gone with the complainant to Pune for the admission and it was an agent who cheated them.
She had also assured to return the money in installments.
