SHILLONG: The State Government is all set to take over the newly-constructed Kolkata Meghalaya House at Russel Street from the Asian Housing Corporation Limited (AHCL) on August 5.

Informing this here on Tuesday, General Administration Department (GAD) Minister HDR Lyngdoh said the State Government would take over the building after clearing all the outstanding dues payable to AHCL.

“We would like to lease out the commercial block of the building immediately after the take-over. The Government is expected to earn revenue from this commercial block,” the GAD Minister said.

Lyngdoh also directed the AHCL to complete the work to connect the sewerage from the building to the main sewerage of Kolkata city at the earliest.

“We are expecting to inaugurate the Meghalaya House formally in October,” he said.

The jinxed project has been marred by series of delays which has led to escalation of the cost from the initial estimated budget of Rs 22 crore to Rs 49.2 crore.

Meanwhile, GAD Minister said that he would be meeting Karnataka Chief Minister in August to discuss the proposal of the State Government to construct a Meghalaya House in Bangalore.

“We will request the Karnataka Government to allot land for the purpose,” he said adding that the Government decided to build a Meghalaya House in Bangalore since a large number of students from the State go to this South Indian city to study.
