SHILLONG: The District Council Affairs Minister HDR Lyngdoh will hold a meeting with the CEMs of the three Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) to discuss the proposed move of the government to constitute the delimitation commission for realigning the Council constituencies.

“I have fixed the meeting for August 1,” Lyngdoh said here on Tuesday.

He said that there was a need to delimitate the Council constituencies since the last Assembly election was conducted as per the new delimited constituencies.

“We want the Council constituencies to be more or less similar to the Assembly constituencies,” the Minister said.

Meanwhile, the Government is also contemplating to extend the tenure of the district councils to complete delimitation of constituencies.

Official sources also indicated that the council election, scheduled for 2014, is likely to be delayed if the Government decides to conduct the same after completing the realignment of constituencies.

KHNAM opposition

Meanwhile, KHNAM has opposed to the proposal of the State Government to hold the Council election after the completion of realignment of constituencies.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the party general secretary Adelbert Nongrum said the District Council Affairs Minister’s statement in this regard was surprising.

Questioning the justification of extending the tenure of the three councils for the sake of delimitating the constituencies, Nongrum said, “This decision was taken only to suit the interest of a section of political leaders. I do not think there is any urgency to delimitate the Council constituencies.”

He also asserted that if the delimitation has to take place, all the mandatory procedures should be followed including consultation with the stakeholders and also holding of the public hearing.
