SHILLONG: The proscribed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), which in the past few years has emerged as a major perpetrator of insurgent activities in the State, is working in close tandem with the Assam-based ULFA.

This was revealed by BSF IG Meghalaya Frontier, Sudesh Kumar during a ‘farewell press conference’ here on Tuesday.

Kumar said the ULFA had been providing arms training to GNLA cadres while the latter helps the Assam-based ultras to cross over to India through traditional routes.

In the past few years, the GNLA has been responsible for several killings, abductions and extortions in the State, especially in Garo Hills.

“GNLA’s intelligence network is quite strong,” the BSF IG said adding that the BSF is also taking various measures to strengthen its intelligence.

The BSF has stationed its men deep inside the Indian territory for acquiring intelligence inputs. The guardians of the border also collect intelligence inputs from the border villagers. “We are sharing our inputs with all law enforcing agencies,” Kumar said.

On reports that ULFA leader Drishti Rajkhowa, who has been named in the recent bomb blast in Paltan Bazar in Guwahati, is hiding in Garo Hills, Kumar said that he was not aware of it. It may be mentioned that the BSF is conducting joint anti-insurgency operations with the State Police in Garo Hills.
